Email Insanity: Solved

The invention of email, let’s face it, changed the game forever. With the click of a few computer keys, a message can now be sent across an office, across a city or across the world. However, what once started as an incredibly helpful technology has now turned into a borderline nuisance. With these helpful tips, you can help avoid the inbox clutter and restore your faith in email once again.

  1. Folders, folders, folders- If your email account consists of one main inbox full of everything from important messages from professors and colleagues to phony credit card and ‘free vacation’ offers, it could be time to implement a little organization. Start by creating a couple key folders to direct your most important messages and keep them separate from the junk.

  2. Email one person at a time- Group messages were fun in middle school, but today they solicit too many response emails to keep straight. Have the same question for a couple different people? Email each individual directly so that conversations can be completed as quickly and easily as possible.

  3. Manage your time- If you let it, reading and responding to emails can quickly take over any ounce of free time you may have. Designate a 15 or 20-minute time slot once or twice a day to simply checking, reading and replying to your emails. By committing to only checking your email, for example, once in the morning and once again at the end of regular business hours you can ensure you are staying updated while not letting email consume your life.

  4. Unsubscribe from old email services- So here’s the deal: you purchased a cool shirt from this little online shop three years ago and they’re still sending you updates and ads… Sound familiar? If you no longer need business updates from a particular organization or company and they’re jamming up your inbox with junk, just hit unsubscribe. Trust me, that company probably sends so many emails to so many people that they’ll only shed a small single tear when they realize you’re no longer on their mailing list.

With these simple yet oh-so-overlooked tips, hopefully you can now regularly look at your email inbox without that small pang of panic you probably now associate with it. Email is meant to be useful and make life easier-- let it!
