Speaking is more than the words you say, it is the movements and gestures you make and do not make.

Confidence is show with good posture and standing up straight. Eye contact will display power looking at individual people for three seconds before straying during a speech.

Vocal variation such as speaking louder, softer, faster or slower is considered non-verbal communication. Be sure to use facial expressions. Your audience studies facial expressions just as much as the words you speak.

Body movement and gestures can either bring in your audience or distract them from your speeches content. Small short hand movements can help wrangle in your audience’s attention. Fast and violent hand movements can distract your audience causing them to tune out what you are saying.

Speaker Jack Pyle uses the acronym S.P.E.A.K. for effective non-verbal communication. The acronym stands for Smile, Posture, Eye contact, Animation and Kinetics. Theses five tips will help you in order to delivery a great speech.

Chapter 14 Giving Speeches and Presentations of Public Relation Writing and Media Techniques eighth edition by Dennis L. Wilcox and Bryan H. Reber was consulted for the production of this blog.
